Revisiting The Rig Movie Theater

A few years ago I took a series of pictures of old movie theaters that were no longer being used and in disrepair.  On my way to McAllen, Texas I found something that looked like something out of the movie, "The Last Picture Show."  This picture of the Rig Theater was in Premont, Texas which had seen better days.  Much of the downtown was vacant and the only business seemed to be the couple of gas stations on Route 281.  If I hadn't looked right on that road I'd have missed this.

The reason I posted this picture is because I read recently that Premont has received permission from the State of Texas to get rid of their sports programs immediately in order to devote the money to education.  The school district is on academic probation and the entire district ...

Thinking of Warmer Weather

A picture of some noted Route 66 icons placed in the middle of another large icon, the Chain O' Rocks Bridge which for decades had carried old Route 66 drivers/passengers from Illinois to Missouri.  Because the bridge was built and supported by certain features of the Mississippi River, it had a crook to it which caused truck drivers to slow down in order to turn and remain in the same lane.

Now it's a nice pedestrian and bike path.

Pardon the lack of a steady hand taking this picture, but it was in low light and through a pane or two of glass and plexiglass at the Cosmodrome in Hutchinson, Kansas.

This Soviet envelope celebrates the second man in space, Gherman Titov, who orbited the Earth for 24 hours in his Vostok 2 in August of 1961.  Titov also became the first man to suffer what is now known as 'space sickness' where weightless conditions cause a disruption in the balance mechanisms of the inner ears. 

I'm not sure if it was Soviet secrecy or artistic license that made the R-7 rocket and space capsule (really a round ball) look like an integrated and streamlined unit.  And the stamp on the left makes it look as though he had plenty of room on the inside.  The Vostok was larger than the U.S. ...
